NON, Karen Mirza ve Brad Butler’ın solo sergisi “Derin
Devlet”i sunar. Serginin merkezinde Mirza ve Butler’ın bilimkurgu yazarı China
Mieville’le ortaklaşa yazdıkları 40 dakikalık bir HD film yer alıyor. Film
adını Türkçe’de ‘devlet içinde devlet’ anlamına gelen ‘Derin Devlet’ tanımından
alıyor. Şahsi çıkar ve gizli ilişkilerin oluşturduğu bu gölge yapılanma, asıl
gücün ikamet ettiği ve temel kararların alındığı söylenen yerdir. Bu kararlar
çoğu zaman göstermelik demokrasi kanısına da aykırıdır.

Butler
Mirza ve Butler’ın sanatsal pratiği ifadesini film, çizim,
enstalasyon, fotoğraf, performans, yayıncılık ve küratörlük gibi farklı
alanlarda buluyor. İkili 2009’dan bu yana, siyasi direniş ve estetik
kavramlarını temsil eden ve sorgulayan ve The Museum of Non Participation
başlığı altında topladıkları bir yapıt bütünü geliştirdi. The Museum of Non
Participation Kahire, Londra ve Karaçi gibi şehirlerde çalışarak deneyimledikleri
jeopolitik gerginliklerden beslenerek bu deneyimleri görünür kılmayı hedefliyor
ve müzeyi dil ve çevirinin eşiklerini tartışmaya açan, jest ve imgeden oluşan
kavramsal bir inşa olarak konumlandırıyor.

NON presents “Deep State”, a solo exhibition featuring the
work of Karen Mirza and Brad Butler. The show places at its center the 40
minute long HD film by Mirza and Butler that has been scripted in collaboration
with the science fiction author China Miéville. The film takes its title from
the Turkish term ‘Derin Devlet’, meaning ‘state within the state’. This shadowy
nexus of special interests and covert relationships is the place where real
power is said to reside, and where fundamental decisions are made – decisions
that often run counter to the outward impression of democracy.

Butler
Mirza and Butler’s practice consists of filmmaking, drawing,
installation, photography, performance, publishing and curating. Since 2009,
they have developed a body of work entitled The Museum of Non Participation
which is interested in representing and interrogating political resistance and
aesthetics. The Museum of Non Participation draws on the geopolitical tensions
experienced by working in locations such as Cairo, London and Karachi and seeks
to make present those experiences, positioning the museum as a conceptual
construct of gesture and image that negotiates the thresholds of language and
translation.
