A meeting point for learning more about the dynamism of the Turkish market, its emerging collectors and its active arts scene Turkey is the guest of honour at the 32nd edition of the International Contemporary Art Fair. The FOCUS Turkey programme, organised in collaboration with the Embassy of Turkey in Spain, is made up of 10 galleries which will be selected by the curator, writer and professor Vasif Kortun, working with curator Lara Fresko. This programme brings together a wide selection of artists from the country, helping collectors and the general public attending the event in Madrid, to learn more about the contemporary art produced in this active emerging market.

In addition, leading institutions, foundations and non-profit spaces from the Turkish contemporary art scene also have a presence at the Fair. The Embassy of Turkey in Spain participates with the work Mesopotamian Dramaturgies / Mayhem, by Kutluğ Ataman (Istanbul, 1961), one of Turkey's most internationally-renowned artists, and the forerunner of a new language of cinematography and ideography.

The Forum and Professional Meetings are also attended by curators, directors and representatives of museums, art centres and cultural institutions, critics and other leading professionals from Turkey, such as Emre Baykal, curator and exhibitions director at the ARTER - Art space; Sevda Elgiz, founder of Proje4L / Contemporary Art Museum in Istanbul; Fulya Erdemci, curator of the 13th Istanbul Biennial in 2013, and director of the SKOR (Foundation for Art and Public Domain); Özge Ersoy, Programmes Director of Collectorspace and editor of m-est.org; Vasif Kortun, director of research and programmes at SALT; Bige Örer Director of the Istanbul Biennial ; Pelin Tan, a sociologist and art historian and associate professor at the Kadir Has University; Gorgun Taner, Director General of the Istanbul Foundation for Culture and Arts (İKSV). These will also be joined by active collectors and other special guests from Turkey, who will be attending to exchange ideas and forge links with the participating galleries.

Meanwhile, the Association of Friends of ARCO has also acknowledged Turkey with its traditional “A” Collecting Award, which in its 17th edition has been presented to the Elgiz Collection, in the International Collecting category, and to Bilge & Haro Cumbusyan / Collectorspace, for their collecting initiative.

Vasif Kortun, curator of Focus Turkey at ARCOmadrid

Vasıf Kortun is a curator, writer and professor working in the field of contemporary visual art and its related institutions and exhibition practices. He is the director of research and programmes at the SALT institution and gives classes in contemporary art, cultural institutions and exhibition practices at the Nuova Accademia di Belle Arti in Milan (NABA) and Istanbul's Bilgi University.
